Scott Thompson
Ward 2 Councillor for Richmond Hill
Elected in 2022, Scott brings extensive experience, deep ties to Richmond Hill, and dedication to his role as City Councillor. A fifth-generation descendant of William and Hannah Thompson, who settled in Richmond Hill in 1830, Scott and his wife purchased their first home in the city in 1998, where they raised their two children.
Before public office, Scott retired from a 37-year government career, gaining a deep understanding of government operations. This experience equipped him with the skills to collaborate effectively and build meaningful relationships with diverse groups. In retirement, he continued to broaden his perspective through contract and part-time work.
As City Councillor, Scott focuses on improving residents' quality of life. He expedited park revitalizations, including Kozak Park, which saw new equipment, improved fencing, and better lighting in Fall 2024. Town Park is also slated for an upgrade in 2026. Scott has been working with the Mayor, city staff and the Association of Families of Flight PS752 Victims to establish a permanent memorial in Unity Park, honoring victims, of which many were from the Richmond Hill area, and reflecting the community’s loss.
Scott is an active Library Board member, ensuring programs meet the needs of Richmond Hill’s diverse community. He also serves on the Village of Richmond Hill Business Improvement Area Board, promoting local businesses and enhancing the area as a top destination. As the owner of a century home listed on the city’s Inventory of Buildings of Architectural and Historical Importance, Scott values Richmond Hill’s heritage.
A highlight of Scott’s tenure was the October 2024 ECO Family Festival, held with Climate Action Richmond Hill. The event attracted many residents, showcasing practical ways to adopt sustainable practices that benefit both the environment and household budgets. This initiative reflects Scott’s commitment to sustainability and community engagement.
Scott is committed to championing his constituents’ needs, ensuring accessible services, advancing climate change policies, and helping residents navigate city services. He remains focused on building a brighter, more sustainable future for Richmond Hill.
